Contingency Alert for Air Quality in Mexico City

For this Thursday, April 24, it has been announced that the air quality in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico will be from bad to very bad. Phase 1 of the atmospheric environmental contingency remains in effect due to high levels of ozone in the air, which entails the implementation of restrictive measures for some vehicles.

Among the traffic restrictions for this day are private vehicles with verification hologram 2, those with hologram 1, and holograms 0 and 00 with green stickers and specific license plate terminations. In addition, the circulation of 50% of gas L.P. delivery units to stationary tanks without dry disconnect valves will be restricted, and the transit of local or federal freight vehicles will be limited during specific hours.

The main recommendation is that the population stays informed about air quality and avoids exposure to high levels of pollution, especially during peak hours between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM. These measures aim to protect the health of citizens and reduce the emission of pollutants, given the meteorological conditions that favor the accumulation of ozone.

The Atmospheric Monitoring System of Mexico City indicates that a high-pressure system in the center of the country, with low cloud cover, high solar radiation, and moderate to strong atmospheric stability, contributes to this situation. It is essential that vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with respiratory diseases take precautions.

To help improve air quality, it is advisable to reduce commuting with remote work and online shopping, avoid the use of products that emit polluting gases, and check for possible gas leaks in installations. Additionally, exemptions from traffic restrictions are granted for electric and hybrid vehicles and those with specific holograms, as well as for cases of medical emergencies and essential services.

The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis and the environmental authorities of Mexico City and the State of Mexico will continue to monitor the situation to issue updates regarding air quality in the region. It is important that the population takes the necessary measures to protect their health and that of those around them in these adverse conditions.
